How To Remove A Cap Nut From Little Tikes

I am so excited to share about this experience, and it'south an actual Repair, 1 of my favorite "R's"!

My son was given this car by i of our neighbors who had outgrown information technology. It'due south a Little Tikes Cozy Coupe, the distinctive carmine and yellow car of youth. They seem to be everywhere in our neighborhood and plainly come in many styles, colors and designs at present. I'k still not sure which exact version/edition I take but it looked like a Cozy Coupe Ii.

After my son had "off-roaded" in this on the cobblestone sidewalk at our local park, we noticed some of the pieces were missing that held on one of the wheels. Not a big deal to bulldoze flat on pavement, but the bike would fall out every time we went to choice it upwardly to motility it, or if he went over a large bump.

The get-go thing I did was check Little Tikes' website to see if there were replacement parts for the auto. There are, which is nifty since "planned obsolescence" and not-repairable merchandise are condign more common themes on many manufactured items. Notwithstanding; the parts sold for the intendance weren't what I wanted.

Missing the horn from the steering wheel, it never worked for united states of america but if this is a key feature for your kid/children y'all may desire to replace it.

Little Tikes does sell a replacement cardinal and a replacement steering bicycle. The horn was in place simply cleaved and the key was missing when we were gifted the car. The family was using a real key and my son loved information technology then we kept it. The horn $.25 somewhen did autumn out and while I could supersede information technology since Little Tikes makes the parts, I'yard passing to avoid the noise.

Next, since I didn't see any replacement hardware listed on Little Tikes' website, I measured the loose washer I yet had from the car to see if Habitation Depot, Lowe'south, or Amazon had the part. No luck.

Asking neighbors if they knew what do practise, several responded. The first with a recommendation to Brood & Co., our local hardware store that is affiliated with Ace Hardware. The 2d shared a link to a bag of these for $5 plus whatever shippping would exist. Since I wasn't 100% confident on the size to order I passed on that. Other neighbors had recommendations for doing things I don't accept tools to do. A close neighbor and friend had "something that might work," yay!, but information technology was besides modest. And then I virtually got it taken intendance of in my neighborhood, enquire for help!

I called Breed & Co. (COVID was/is in play so I didn't become in to talk over plus salve the gas trip, correct?) and was able to depict this in a style they figured out what it was called. I basically used every word I had found and described what it was doing. Breed & Co. calls them push basics, Petty Tikes calls information technology an axel cap, Amazon calls them decorate push-ons, plastic cap, cap nuts and cap studs and then you tin imagine this was confusing at first with Breed & Co. They're awesome and if I hadn't done what I did adjacent, I would have braved the shop (first thing in the morning with mask to avert crowds) and gone in with my washer for help since they were sure they had the size I needed.

I decided to do one last thing, which I should have done first. Since I still wasn't certain what size to get, especially after calling Breed & Co., I emailed Little Tikes. When I spoke with Breed & Co. I had been measuring the width of the washer thinking since the button nut would go over everything, that was what mattered. Non so. Breed & Co. said I needed to measure the metallic bolt itself that the push nut would go onto. Since it'seemed in the center of sizes and didn't lucifer some of the results I was seeing on hardware sites, I was going to see if Petty Tikes could tell me the exact size to buy at the shop.

Well, AMAZING customer service! I had looked upward the teaching transmission (almost all instruction manuals are bachelor online, even if something is "new to you") to enquire them the size of what Little Tikes called the part. I explained:

Do you ever sell or send lost parts? I've lost the ii Bushing (X) and one Axle Cap (U) for my Cozy Coupe II Motorcar and would really like to keep the wheel on so it doesn't fall out of the hole. If non, tin can you please tell me the diameter of the push nut/axle cap so I can purchase the correct replacement at the hardware store? Thank you.

Well they responded immediately that they would send me the parts I requested and were just waiting on a new shipment of bushings before they would be able to help me out! No cost guys and grace-given this arrived the solar day before my son'due south birthday so he had his car to zoom around on his special twenty-four hours!

I have iii take-aways hither:

  1. Petty Tikes is awesome for having replacements and while I wish more than were listed directly on their website, the customer service to help you out and non make you purchase another car, spectactular.
  2. It's possible to repair more than y'all expect. Yous may have to practice a little research and a picayune piece of work. That time was worth information technology for me, or you can spend $58 on a new car plus all that new-car assembly time. Not repairing things contributes to more items in the waste stream.
  3. Neighbors are awesome! We have a neighborhood Facebook group, and a Nextdoor group, and because and so many people are there together going through their stage of life and having their experiences, they tin can seriously help y'all out. I also had help rewiring a lamp and where to buy a garage window replacement from neighbors. So skilful!

What bully thing accept you repaired that y'all at commencement didn't think you lot could?
